Can Diamonds Survive A Free Market?

Thursday, August 06, 2009, Edward Jay Epstein

Despite its celebrated slogan “Diamonds Are Forever,” De Beers, which has dominated the diamond business for over a century, is discovering that diamond profits are not forever.

It reported in July that its profits for the first half of 2009 fell by no less than 99%. The problem is not that the mining giant is running out of diamonds. Its highly-efficient diamond mines in South Africa, Botswana and Namibia still supply about 40 percent of the world’s gem-sized diamonds. Nor have diamonds lost their value. They not only remain a vital part of the engagement ritual but their retail price of engagement rings has actually risen in 2009.

What is killing De Beer’s profits is the prohibitive cost of running a cartel. The cartel arrangement is necessary to sustain the illusion that diamonds are rare. Continue reading

Berlian Dan Pemakaiannya Bagi Manusia

Teknologi Zaman Keemasan
Pemakaian Permata Dapat Bermanfaat Bagi Manusia

Continue reading

Hindari Kecurangan Link Exchange

http://rachmattullah.com/?p=413
Posted on October 15th, 2009 in Permasalahan Blog, link exchange

Kecurangan dalam link exchange / bertukar link banyak dilakukan oleh para blogger yang serakah, mereka menaruh link / banner blog yang bertukar link dengannya pada tepat yang tidak sesuai misalkan ;

Automatic Link Exchange Penipuan ?

Para blogger mania tentunya sudah tahu kan automatic link Exchange (tukeran link otomatis)? Contohnya seperti Mister Linky’s Magical Widget.

19 April 2009 00:22

A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words

Take a look at this.  “Wow, a picture’s worth a thousand words!” You can say that again.  “Wow, a picture’s …..”

I’ve said it. You’ve said it.  Everyone I know has used it sometime or other.

Where did this phrase originate?

A quotation that most likely is a Chinese proverb.  A Confucianism – doubtlessly.

I should have known better.

Two opinions.  Neither has anything to with the exotic notions I’ve entertained for decades as to where this timeless saying has its beginnings.

After reading these explanations, I think that I’ll just keep on believing that it is indeed, an old Chinese proverb.  A mental image that is far more acceptable and imaginative than what I read here.

I’m disappointed.

This is the original advertisement that inspired the quotation, “A Picture Is Worth One Thousand Words.” The quotation is actually phony. The “Chinese” quotation was fabricated by an advertising executive representing a baking soda company. The executive assumed that consumers would be compelled to buy a product that had the weight of Chinese philosophy behind it. A young boy’s smile is equal to many words explaining the benefits of the product. The ad was most often seen as a streetcar card in which customers did not have much time to read ad copy

This is the original “Chinese proverb” from the streetcar advertisement.

The quotation has wrongly been translated as: A Picture Is Worth One Thousand Words.

In fact, the literal translation is: A Picture’s Meaning Can Express Ten Thousand Words.

Somehow the phony Chinese proverb over the years has been given the literal meaning that a picture is equivalent to a thousand words setting up a clash between words and pictures in the minds of users of the two. With digital hegemony, visual messages have reasserted their position as an important communication medium, but at the cost of not recognizing the combination of words and pictures as vital in communication. With the correct interpretation of the proverb, words and pictures live in harmony as they are both used equally in order to understand the meaning of any work that uses them both.

A picture is worth a thousand words

Meaning

A picture tells a story just as well as a large amount of descriptive text.

Origin

This phrase emerged in the USA in the early part of the 20th century. Its introduction is widely attributed to Frederick R. Barnard, who published a piece commending the effectiveness of graphics in advertising with the title “One look is worth a thousand words“, in Printer’s Ink, December 1921. Barnard claimed the phrase’s source to be oriental by adding the text “so said a famous Japanese philosopher, and he was right”. A picture is worth a thousand words

Printer’s Ink printed another form of the phrase in March 1927, this time suggesting a Chinese origin:

“Chinese proverb. One picture is worth ten thousand words.”

How to Build Quality Backlinks

Written by : NGDlover

Backlink is outhere and we dont have total control on them. My experienced relate to backlink is not much as any SEO master have, but I’m eager to share, I hope you will find a piece of gold inside my article, or my articles…. The difficult side about backlink is base on the fact that we rely on others to build it, although this is partially true. You certainly can discuss about the detail like anchor text, and many aspects there that can be negotiated.

Getting Backlinks By Natural Way

Base on fact that if you have a good page, people will start to make a linkback to good pages you have, then the backlink become a part of  the page rank algorithm. Ideally, the more good pages you have, the more backlinks you will receive, but it is different in practise, and we cannot rely on this.

Meaning of Intrinsic Value

Intrinsic value, in general, is the argument that the value of a product is intrinsic within the product rather than dependent on the buyer’s perception.

In commodity money, intrinsic value can be partially or entirely due to the desirable features of the object as a medium of exchange and a store of value. Examples of such features include divisibility; easily and securely storable and transportable; scarcity; and hard to counterfeit. When objects come to be used as a medium of exchange they lower the high transaction costs associated with barter and other in-kind transactions.

In numismatics, intrinsic value is the value of the metal, typically a precious metal, in a coin. For example, if gold trades at a price of USD 450 per fine troy ounce ($14/g), a coin minted from one troy ounce of fine gold would have an intrinsic value of USD 450. When the intrinsic value becomes greater than the face value, the coins are in danger of being removed from circulation in large numbers (an expression of Gresham’s law). When the coin is in use as money this effect can, at the margin, mitigate forces that might otherwise cause inflation. When copper prices skyrocketed in the mid-to-late 1970s, there was a fear that the U.S. one-cent piece might succumb to this fate. In fact, this did happen, leading the Mint to change the composition of the cent in 1982.

Due to this intrinsic value, an ounce of gold measured in hundred years ago is exactly similar with ounce gold today and must be similar with ounce gold on the next hundred years. This become a base reason for the gold to be a truly anti inflation investment tools.

If we look at other popular investment tools, such as oil and stocks, as a comparison, they are not fit with term anti inflation tools. They are new to be an investment vehicle (start only from 18 centuries), and the demand for them even could disappear in the market. See further explanation here >> Gold And Its Intrinsic Value<<
